Supporting Communities

Help local groups get online.

Give any amount a month, as a person or a business. Everything goes into one shared pot, and every £20 a month in it funds another community website.

For sponsors

  • Any amount you like, monthly
  • Listed on Our supporters, or anonymous
  • No contract, cancel any time
  • A receipt on request
How the pot works

Simple for you, simple for me

You do not need to pick a group, find neighbours to share a bill, or work out who pays what. Give what you like, and I make it go as far as it can.

1. Sponsors give

Any amount

£5, £10, £20, £50 or more a month, by card through Stripe.

2. The pot

One shared pot

Every payment goes in. Each week I check how much is not yet used.

3. Websites funded

£20 funds a site

Every £20 a month of unused support opens a place for the next group on the list.

An example

Small amounts add up

Say four new sponsors join in the same week. Their amounts go into the pot, and together they make £60 a month. That is enough to fund three more community websites.

  • Nobody has to give £20 for it to count
  • A £5 sponsor and a £50 sponsor are equally welcome
  • When the total reaches a full £20 slot, the next group goes live

Try it

See what your amount does

Move the sliders to see how a monthly amount adds up in the pot. Every £20 a month of unused support funds one more community website.

Pick an amount, or slide to any amount

Try four people at £5, or ten at £10.

In the pot each month

£10

That is half of one community website (£20 a month).

£120 over a year.

How the amounts add up (without JavaScript, here are some examples):

  • £5 a month is a quarter of a website; four people at £5 fund one
  • £10 a month is half; two people at £10 fund one
  • £20 a month funds one community website
  • £60 a month across several sponsors funds three

An illustration of the arithmetic only. The pot is shared, so your money is not tied to one group, and I open new places each week as the pot allows.

Who the pot helps

How I decide which groups are funded

I keep a list of groups waiting for support and work through it in the open, so you can see how it goes.

01

Community groups first

Village halls, clubs, societies, charities and classes come first. Then community-style businesses, the kind that serve their local area.

02

In the order they applied

Within each of those, groups are generally funded in the order they applied. I tell every group where they are on the list.

03

Weekly, as slots open

Each week I check the pot. Every £20 a month of unused support opens a place, and groups that pay part need less than £20 from the pot.

You can tell me a preference, such as a type of group or an area, and I will take it into account. Because the pot is shared, I cannot promise your money reaches one particular group. The Our communities page shows which sites are funded.

How you are thanked

Credit that is plain and easy to keep accurate

Because sponsors give into a shared pot, credit is shared too. It is simple, accurate and easy to keep up to date.

  • Every sponsor is listed on Our supporters, unless they choose to stay anonymous
  • Businesses can include a logo and a link, marked as a sponsored link
  • Every website the pot funds carries a short thank-you to the community sponsors, linking to that page
Good to know

Straight answers

It is a sponsorship, not a donation. JW is not a charity, so Gift Aid does not apply. The money pays for websites to be built, hosted and kept up to date, and I am paid for that work.

Groups stay in control. Sponsors have no say over what a group publishes, and the website belongs to the group.

If the pot shrinks, for example because a sponsor stops, sites that were already funded stay live for three months while I make up the difference. More in the FAQ and the terms.

Paying is simple. A monthly card subscription through Stripe, in set amounts of £5, £10, £20 or £50. Other amounts can be agreed. Stop at any time and payments stop.

Add to the pot

A short form is all it takes. I will reply, usually the same day, and set up your monthly payment.
