About
I build every JW Community Websites site myself — no team, no call centre, no handoffs. Here's the story behind that, and why it matters for the kind of groups I work with.
I'm based in Boston, Lincolnshire, and I've spent years building websites for small local businesses and tradespeople through my other business, JW Business Websites. Along the way, I kept running into the same story from a different kind of customer: village halls, clubs, charities and voluntary groups who needed a website just as much as any business did, but who were being quoted the same prices as a business — and expected to pay upfront, out of a pot of money that came from raffles and membership fees, for a service most agencies had built with a very different kind of customer in mind.
A community group isn't a business. Nobody's taking a salary from it. The people running it are volunteers, often juggling it alongside a full-time job, and the committee itself changes every year or two as people step down and new members take over. A website built for a business — with an upfront design fee, a login only one person knows how to use, and a support contract nobody read properly — simply doesn't survive that kind of turnover.
So I built something different, specifically for groups like this: no setup fee, so there's nothing for a committee to have to vote through before there's anything to show for it; and updates included without limit, so the site doesn't quietly go stale the moment the one person who understood it moves on.
When you get in touch, you're talking to me — not a salesperson who hands you over to a build team, and not a support ticket that gets answered by whoever's free. I have a conversation with you about your group, I write the content, I build the site, and once it's live, I'm the one who makes every update you send over. There's no one else involved.
That's a deliberate choice, not a limitation. Working this way means I actually know the groups I build for — I remember what you told me last time, I know your committee, and there's never any confusion about who's responsible for getting something fixed or changed. It also keeps the whole thing affordable: without an office, a sales team or layers of account management to pay for, the savings go straight into keeping the price at £50 a month with nothing added on.
I work with village halls, community centres, clubs and societies, charities and voluntary groups, and residents' associations, based anywhere in the UK — everything is done by phone, email and video call, so there's no need for me to be local to you. If your group is run by volunteers, changes committee members every so often, and needs a website that stays current without someone having to become the unofficial IT person, this was built with you in mind.
No jargon, no technical terms you're expected to already know. If something needs explaining, I'll explain it properly — as many times as it takes.
If something's outside what I offer — a complex booking system, an online shop — I'll say so upfront rather than stretching to take the work on.
You'll never be pushed towards an add-on you don't need. If the standard site covers what your group needs, that's genuinely all I'll suggest.
Not everyone is comfortable with computers, and that's completely fine. A phone call works exactly as well as an email — however you'd rather get in touch.
